Reason To Breathe by: Rebecca Donovan
Synopsis: No one tried to get involved with me, and I kept to myself. This was the place where everything was supposed to be safe and easy. How could Evan Mathews unravel my constant universe in just one day?"
In the affluent town of Weslyn, Connecticut, where most people worry about what to be seen in and who to be seen with, Emma Thomas would rather not be seen at all. She’s more concerned with feigning perfection while pulling down her sleeves to conceal the bruises - not wanting anyone to know how far from perfect her life truly is. Without expecting it, she finds love. It challenges her to recognize her own worth - but at the risk of revealing the terrible secret she’s desperate to hide.
Reason to Breathe is an electrifying page turner from start to finish, a unique tale of life-changing love, unspeakable cruelty, and one girl’s fragile grasp of hope.
WORST BOOK EVER. WORST BOOK EVER. WORST BOOK EVER. WORST BOOK EVER. WORST BOOK EVER. WORST BOOK EVER.
WARNING. IF YOU ENJOYED THIS BOOK OR CONSIDER YOURSELF A FAN OF THIS AUTHOR, DO NOT READ ANY FARTHER. YOU WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE A HAPPY CAMPER AFTERWARDS. AND NO, THIS WILL NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS.
Alright so I hated this book from the moment I picked it up. Like I was literally one chapter in and already debated quitting. The only reason the did actually finish it was because my family and i went on a road trip and this was one of the only unread books I had on my kindle. It also causes me a lot of anxiety when I don't finish a book, no matter how bad it is. I want to be able to say with absolute certainty that I didn't like and that I gave it lots of chances to change my mind. I know that I can say with utmost certainty that this is the worst book I have read in 2015 and quite possibly 2014 as well. The was even worse then Anna Todd's, After and thats saying A LOT coming from me.
There wasn't a single thing I liked about this excuse for a novel. The writing was absolutely atrocious, the dialogue was SO FREAKING WEAK, the plot was terrible and I HATED EVERY SINGLE F-ING CHARACTER.
First lets talk about the writing a little bit... I don't know about any of you guys but when I read a book, I usual presume that I will be able to follow what is going on but NOPE, THAT WAS TO MUCH TO ASK FOR APPARENTLY. It was like the author just accidentally deleted parts of her book. Like one moment the character is at home and then the next she is at school and then the next paragraph she is making out with her boyfriend and then she's suddenly back at home... does whatever her name is have teleportation skills?? DOES SHE?? OR IS IT TO FREAKING DIFFICULT TO EXPLAIN HOW PEOPLE MOVE AND INTERACT?!?!?!?!?!?!? *clears throat* Another thing that angered me was the dialogue. Im not joking when I say that the conversations between the main character and her love interest would go like this:
Boy: "So, how was your weekend?"
Girl: "Fine, how was yours?"
Boy: "Thats good, mine was good too. You played well at your soccer game by the way."
Boy: "Want to go play a game of darts?"
Girl: "Okay." *starts blushing uncontrollably*
OH MY GOD SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? OH MY GOD. HOW CAN ANY SANE HUMAN EXPECT ME TO LIKE THEIR "ROMANCE" WHEN THEIR COMMUNICATIONAL SKILLS ARE WORSE THEN DOGS. AT LEAST SHE KNOWS HOW TO COMMUNICATE HER FEELINGS TO US. IT WAS LIKE THESE PEOPLE HAD NEVER SPOKEN TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEFORE. UGH.
My main problem though was... dammit... I can't even remember her name... who ever the main character is... Emma!!!!! (I totally didn't just google her name)
***One more point before I continue, how hard is it to come up with unique character names? Like I don't mean I need running around with fancy ass names no one an possibly spell but it was like this author just google the top 10 baby names of 2014 and just used that to name her characters. Like not only did I not have A SINGLE CLUE as to what any of the characters looked like but they were all named "Emma", "Sara", "Even", "Katie", "Jill" etc etc etc. HOW DO YOU EXPECT ME TO REMEMBER THESE WHEN I HAVE READ ABOUT 8000 DIFFERENT EMMAS IN MY LIFE TIME.
Anywho... continuing on with my rant about Emma #356. She has got to be one of the worst characters I have ever read about. For those of you who don't know, she is physically abused at home (by her aunt) and doesn't have any friends and stuff so I understand that she has problems trusting people and that some situations could be difficult of her. We all lose our shit every once in a while. My problem was that all this chick did was cry and freak out. and not only did she just continue to lose her mind every minute of every chapter but she refused to do anything to fix her life and thats what royally pissed me off. She wouldn't stand up to anyone, she would push EVERYONE away, she was always keeping secrets from everyone and she would just sit in her room and cry. There were SOOOO many opportunities in which doctors and teachers asked her about her injuries from the abuse at home yet she would just lie and then cry herself to sleep in her room. Her excuse was that her aunt had 2 kids of her own and Emma didnt want to ruin those kids lives by putting their mom and jail. Did it even cross Emma's mind that maybe its not actually safe for these two kids to be living with an abusive and mentally stable woman?!? That maybe it would help them more if they didn't always hear their mom yelling and watch her beat up their cousin? She was absolutely useless and because of that, I just couldn't have any respect for her. Also, I really didn't get what she saw in her love interest. I really don't. He was weird, creepy, and annoying. And I swear to god, if I continued to have to hear about his "crooked grins" I was going to throw my kindle out the window. ew. just stop.
This book was horrible. Please don't waste your time on it. I wanted to like it... I really did. I can't understand why this book has such a high rating. Thanks for letting me rant guys!!
